Monumental Black

On the rural fringe of the lifestyle township of Clevedon is this barn inspired house. This house has created more interest than any other house I have designed in the last 10 years. It is a product of creative clients, a rural aesthetic exterior and a lifestyle interior, it epitomises modern Auckland. 3 simple barn […]

The clients had long admired the Queenslander with its first storey living, louvre ventilation and wide verandahs. The style suits New Zealand’s climate nearly as well as tropical northern Australia so when they came to build this was their brief albeit with the constraints of a suburban section in one of Auckland’s eastern beach suburbs. […]

Rustic Barn USA

A barn first constructed in 1780 lies dismantled in a yard in the US waiting export to NZ for reassembly as a new home. Note the huge size of the hand hewn timbers and the marriage marks etched on the frame when new, only 230 years ago. The marks were to ensure it was assembled […]

In the style of the traditional country house the inspiration for the form of this house came from the Fredrick Thatcher church across the river. The interior style and planning though is all modern, open plan, with a large farm-style kitchen and mezzanine family room. Carefully designed to maximize the sun and views and to […]

Country Villa

This was a relocated standard villa (from Remuera) that we have twice added to, more than doubling the floor area. We all love the generous volumes of a villa but they lack the living space and conveniences for a 21st century home. The additions were designed to blend sympathetically with the old and deliver additional […]

Rustic Country House Extension

A growing family of boys needed a sizeable extension to house them and their activities. The rustic styling of the original house was continued outside, cedar weatherboards and windows, while inside there is a combination of polished concrete (with crushed shells and timber inlays), rustic beams, sleeper steps and TG&V linings.

Modern Country House

This house acknowledges a heritage of farm buildings that have gone before. Built in 2000 on a tight budget we have recently gone back and completed a seamless addition that now makes it a generous family home.

Opito House

An Auckland business couple who live in a Californian bungalow in town wanted a bolt hole at the beach to escape the city. In a role reversal we designed a town house at the beach. It has all the casualness of a bach, with great indoor/ outdoor flow and a big shed for the tractor […]

Brookby Manor

Architect designed in the early 70’s this house had “good bones” and a beautiful site above the Brookby valley but a dated-look and was too small for the new owners. We managed to build in the formerly free-standing garages (as the boys bedrooms and rumpus) and extend past this with a guest wing and new […]

The Mother of all Baches.

This house has been so successful it has spawned many other commissions, admirers and even copies. Nestled into the side of a steep hill all its outdoor living is on the decks. Sun drenched, they maximize the expansive coastal views while offering total privacy. Based on the traditional bach style and construction materials (corrugated steel […]

House design of all types: new, additions and alterations is where it began for lots of architects and we love it as well. New Zealand has a tradition of finely detailed architecturally designed homes and we hope you agree that we have added to that heritage. We love designing new houses and in particular the freedom that comes with a beach house but there is also real pleasure in transforming some of our beautiful villas and bungalows into houses for 21st century living.

Summer has officially ended and we are now hoping the weather gods have taken notice and send us some rain. Despite the arrival of Covid 19 there appears to be no slackening in the demand for our services. Clevedon is set to explode with Watercare’s sewerage to be ready by April 2020. We will see, works are progressing and temporarily inconvenient! Clevedon Cares, a local initiative, with aims to develop Clevedon in a stylish way along the lines of Matakana and Hobsonville, have done great work establishing design guidelines for buildings and putting bridal/ walking and cycling paths around the township. We are set for an exciting 2020 and beyond.
